Welcome to the end of it all. Almost. Clearly I’ve fallen off the bus for keeping this up, though I’m reading a ton more lately. I can’t suggest enough the unbelievable graphic novel Locke & Key. It’s by Joe Hill, who wrote Heart-Shaped Box (which is one of the best horror novels I’ve ever read, and the fifth book I read this year). It is five trades long currently (with a sixth and final likely to come out midway next year; I was crushed to discover the story wasn’t done) and I flew through them really fast. I was so enthralled by the story, in fact, that I set down The Last Policeman to read it.
The Last Policeman isn’t to be taken as a throwaway, however. It is probably my second favorite novel I’ve read this year, falling only behind Ready Player One (how unfortunate is it to have read the best book of the year so early, always falling short of finding something to stack up to it?). It is methodical, moody, and dystopian. The Last Policeman is one of those books that leaves me guessing, confused, worried, and without hope. But just like the characters in a world where an asteroid is barreling hopelessly toward Earth, I must trudge through it in the face of assured destruction, I must press on regardless. There’s still a lot of beauty out there, right?
Speaking of, winter break starts on the 20th. That’s only 10 days, but maybe… Maybe there’s a chance yet that I can hit at least one of my goals. Let’s make this a December to remember and finish strong. I’ll also likely be putting together a best-of list for music on the year sometime around the last 10 days or so. Break is awesome and I have a lot of music that amazed me this year.
Fair bit of shifting around this week (point five). A lot of people close to success. Get you some success.

I do believe I shall participate in this challenge next year, as well.
